Publication 505 (2026) says that if you file your 2026 Form 1040 or 1040-SR by January 31, 2027 and pay the rest of the tax you owe, you don't need to make the payment due January 15, 2027. The IRS's example: you pay no estimated tax for 2026, then file and pay the balance on January 26, 2027; your fourth-period payment is treated as paid on time, but you may still owe a penalty for the first three payments, figured up to January 26, 2027.

Dates (weekday = calendar facts)

Date What Weekday
January 15, 2027 Fourth payment due (tax year 2026) Friday
January 31, 2027 Last day to file and pay to use the exception Sunday

Pub. 505's Saturday/Sunday/holiday rule moves a payment due date that falls on a weekend or holiday to the next business day. Whether that rule also moves the January 31 filing condition to Monday, February 1, 2027 is not stated in the passage we read, so we don't assume it.

Who this does not help

  • It doesn't cancel penalties for missed earlier payments.
  • It's a different rule from the farming/fishing one: if at least two-thirds of gross income for 2025 or 2026 is from farming or fishing, the only date is January 15, 2027, and filing by March 1, 2027 with full payment removes the need to pay.

Fiscal-year note

For fiscal-year taxpayers the last payment may be skipped if the return is filed by the last day of the first month after year-end and all tax is paid.

What we could not verify

  • Whether the weekend rule affects the January 31, 2027 condition.
  • The 2027 tax year dates (Form 1040-ES not published; Jan. 18, 2028 etc. remain our calculation).
  • How the penalty is computed for the earlier periods.
